Extension of the contract for the Barnsley Carers Service (ODD/130/2022)

Decision Maker: Cabinet Spokesperson Adults and Communities

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

To extend the contract with Making Space for provision of the Barnsley Carers Service for a period of 8 months.

Reasons for the decision:

The Barnsley Carers Strategy has been reviewed and refreshed and will be presented at Cabinet in June 2022. This strategy will influence the specification for the future procurement of the Barnsley Carers Service.

The contract for the current carers service with Making Space is due to expire on 31 July 2022.

An 8-month contract extension period is necessary to give sufficient time for the requirements to the new strategy to be included in the specification for the carers service and for a new service to be procured with a start date of 1 April 2023. The value of the contract extension is £159,918.64.

Communities DMT and Procurement Team colleagues have been consulted on this course of action.

Alternative options considered:

Allowing the current service to end on 31 July 2022 without a new service being in place would result in a gap in the support offered to carers. This could result in more carers reaching crisis point and requiring more intensive support for both themselves and the person they care for.
