Decision:

To accept the additional £50k grant on offer from Sustrans under Tranche 4 National Cycle Network Improvement funding.

Reasons for the decision:

The Department of Transport via Sustrans offered BMBC PROW team a 100% grant of £694k to carry out improvement works on two sections of the Trans Pennine Trail ( A61 – Haverlands Lane, Worsbrough and Smithly Wood Lane, Dodworth to Moorend Lane, Silkstone Common).  This was approved by Cabinet spokesperson in September 2021.

The estimated costs for these projects were provided to Sustrans before Christmas 2020 and since then Brexit, COVID, Fuel and HGV driver shortages have all pushed up the costs.  As a result Sustrans have offered Barnsley an additional £50k to help fund the project which needs ODR approval so Finance can increase the budget in the Capital Programme.

The spend deadline for the project is the end of May 2022, and the whole grant will be reclaimed in one go when works are completed.
