Acceptance of funding from Friends of Cannon Hall Gardens (ODD/049/2022)

Decision Maker: Executive Director Growth and Sustainability

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

To accept funding of up to £200,000 from the Friends of Cannon Hall Gardens for renovation work at Cannon Hall which they have received as a legacy. In addition for Barnsley Council to act as Accountable Body for the entire fund. There are no match funding requirements.

Reasons for the decision:

Barnsley Council own and manage Cannon Hall Museum Park and Gardens. The Friends Group who are a registered charity have received funding through a legacy left to them. The funds must be spent at Cannon Hall Gardens and the Friends Group have agreed that they will invest this funding in renovation work in the grounds for the benefit of the public, they require the Council’s professional services to be able to obtain the most from this legacy. Specifically the funding will pay for the restoration of the Vinery, conservation works to the Plunge Pool and the creation of a sensory garden.

Alternative options considered:

This funding is to be spent at Cannon Hall but the Friends Group do not have the professional experience to administer and procure the renovation works in the Grade II listed landscape. As land owner the Council are best placed to work in partnership with the Friends Group to ensure the work is carried out to an acceptable standard.
